The process of freezing your eggs begins with an egg retrieval. Eggs are retrieved from their follicles (fluid-filled sacs) in the ovaries. An embryologist finds the eggs and moves them to a clean dish. The excess cumulus cells (cells that surrounded the eggs inside the follicles) are carefully removed with a needle. The remaining cumulus cells are removed with an enzyme that breaks the bonds between the cumulus cells. This process can be completed at the time of the egg retrieval or anytime in between the retrieval and freeze. When the eggs are cleaned, they can be graded based on their maturity. Eggs are usually frozen a few hours after they are retrieved. This is referred to as day 0 in the lab. Typically, only mature eggs are frozen, but different labs may have different protocols. When it’s time to freeze the eggs, they’re placed into a freezing medium (fluid). This medium removes water from the eggs (which is good because it prevents ice crystals from forming), so it’s common to see eggs shrink while they’re being frozen. The eggs begin to re-expand as they take in a cryoprotectant agent from the fluid. This protects the eggs when they’re frozen. After a few minutes (exact times vary with different media manufacturers), the eggs are placed into another freezing medium (fluid) that contains a higher concentration of the cryoprotectant agent for a few seconds (again, times may vary). The eggs are then placed on the tip of a cryo device and quickly plunged into liquid nitrogen. It’s common to freeze 2 eggs on the same device, but every clinic may have its own protocol. Each device should be labeled with pertinent information (your name, date, etc.). All of the cryo devices are then placed into a plastic goblet, which is secured to a metal cane. These should also be labeled for easy locating. The metal cane is then placed into a liquid nitrogen storage tank (cryotank), where the eggs can remain stored for years. The tanks should be monitored 3 times a week and filled with liquid nitrogen once a week to ensure that the eggs are always submerged in liquid nitrogen. #eggfreezing #fertilitypreservation #ivf #oocytecryopreservation #explainingivf #egg #eggs

When I got divorced, the first thing I did was start saving up for my egg freezing procedure because egg freezing is expensive! There are multiple tests, medications, hormones, plus the surgery, freezing process, and the yearly cost of maintaining your eggs in the lab. I froze my eggs with @doctoryuvi at @nimaaya_health in Baroda, and I highly recommend it! If you want to delay your fertility and have a partner that you want to have babies with, consider freezing embryos instead of eggs = you get better results. However, since I did not have that luxury, I chose to freeze my eggs. I’m not even sure if I want to have kids, but this investment gave me so much freedom to stop worrying about the biological clock and chase my dreams! Do you have any questions about egg freezing?
