Someone laid a cream-colored egg for the 2nd time! What do you think? Did the ink run out or is it a heavy bloom? The bloom can vary a lot from chicken to chicken and from season to season. The girl that laid this cream-colored egg may have had a hiccup in her pigment production process OR it could be a heavy bloom. The way to find out is to wash it, but I had to sell this 18 pack as soon as I threw it together. The bloom allows eggs to sit out at room temperature for a month. It prevents the egg from spoiling during incubation as well. Safe handling suggests to keep cold eggs cold to prevent condensation from causing contamination; when you wash them, make sure to cook them or refrigerate promptly to avoid spoilage. Your 💧 must be warmer than the inside of the egg to ensure there is no bacterial transfer (I’ll do another video on this) some people don’t see a difference, but if you don’t want to chance it, stick with this rule! #homestead #eggs #farmfresh #heavybloom #farmtotable

Farm Fresh Facts: • Did you know fresh eggs have something called a protective bloom on them? It’s an invisible protective membrane over the shell-it seals the egg from oxygen and bacteria thus protecting it. • For longest lasting eggs, do not wash them until you’re ready to eat them! To wash, rinse carefully in warm water without soap. • Washed eggs must be refrigerated and last about 2 months, unwashed refrigerated eggs last about 3 months. • You can also leave eggs unwashed on your countertops, those last about 21 days(3 weeks). • What’s your preferred way to store farm fresh eggs? . #farmfresheggs #farmtotable #farmlife #countrychickens #chickeneggs

Do you have to wash dirty farm fresh eggs? Here’s what we do 👇 If they’re dirty, we wash them and refrigerate. If they’re clean, we leave them unwashed so the natural bloom stays intact.

The bloom on an egg is a protective coating applied by the hen just before laying. This, commonly whitish or chalky, layer seals the shell pores, protecting against bacteria and keeping eggs fresh for weeks at room temperature. A heavy bloom is an extra thick coating that can change the color of an egg! Often these eggs will look purple, pink, or olive. Getting them wet reveals the true shell color underneath that magical bloom ❤️ • • • • • #backyardchickens #homestead #fresheggsdaily #farmtotable #organic

Farm eggs don’t need a fridge and here’s why… Every fresh egg has a natural coating called the bloom that seals tiny pores in the shell. This keeps bacteria out while still allowing the egg to breathe. Once washed, the bloom is gone → store eggs must be refrigerated Nature literally designed eggs to protect themselves. Amazing, right?
