Egg retrieval is sold as a procedure. A step in the process. Something you go in for, come out of, and then wait. What they don’t fully prepare you for is what it actually looks like on the other side of it. Watching Eleanor come round after each retrieval, seeing what her body had just been through, the discomfort, the exhaustion, the way she’d try to reassure me she was fine when she clearly wasn’t, that never got easier. Not once. And I think that’s the part that doesn’t get talked about enough from the partner’s side. You are not going through it physically. But you are watching someone you love go through something really hard, round after round, and there is almost nothing you can do except be there. That helplessness has a weight to it. You want to fix it. You want to take some of it from her. You want to do something useful. And mostly you just sit there and hold her hand and tell her she’s incredible, because she is, and because it’s the only thing you have. Eleanor went through this more times than anyone should have to. Every single time she got back up and did it again. This drop is expected biology, not bad news. Let’s break it down simply 👇 🥚 Stage 1: Eggs Retrieved – 15 Doctors may retrieve many eggs, but not all are usable. 👉 Some eggs are immature 👉 Some are poor quality 📉 Number reduces here first 🧬 Stage 2: Mature Eggs – 10 Only mature eggs can be fertilised. That means: 15 retrieved → around 10 mature eggs 📉 Another natural drop 🔬 Stage 3: Fertilised Eggs – 6 Even healthy eggs don’t always fertilise. Embryo transfer is the most important step in your IVF journey!! The most important factors responsible for it's success are: 1. A GOOD ENDOMETRIUM: ideal endometrium for embryo transfer is >7mm, triple line with good vascularity. 2. GOOD QUALITY EMBRYOS: embryos are graded before transfer, grade 1 embryos (AA) have high probability of implantation. 3. ATRAUMATIC EMBRYO TRANSFER: A smooth embryo transfer is ideal and increases the chances of implantation. We are pulling the trigger tonight on round four! 🥳 My follicles are looking great! Most are well over 16 mm, but I have a few at 10-14 mm. Hopefully, these will catch up in size by retrieval day. 🤞🏻 This round is starting to look a little similar to my second round of IVF. My ovaries have shifted, and as of this morning, it looked like it could be a little challenging to reach all of my follicles during retrieval. So, tomorrow (to add to the fun 🤪), I’ll be doing a bowel prep (similar to the one you’d do for a colonoscopy). Hopefully, this will make it easier to retrieve my eggs. 🙏🏻 I’m a little anxious.
