But in embedded systems, firmware is the software that directly controls the hardware. It sits between the hardware and the application layer. Firmware decides how the microcontroller reads sensors, drives outputs, or communicates through UART, I2C, and SPI. Unlike normal software, firmware is stored in non-volatile memory, runs without an OS, and must be optimized for timing, memory, and power.
