Bee fact of the day: did you know human breath irritates honey bees? They are very sensitive to smell and breathing directly on them can cause them to become noisy and defensive. So don’t eat that garlic bread before you head out beekeeping! #bees #honey #garlic

A queen bee and a worker bee start as identical eggs in identical cells. The only difference is what they’re fed. Worker larvae receive regular bee bread — a mix of pollen and honey. The queen larva is fed royal jelly exclusively, from day one to the end of her life. Royal jelly activates a completely different set of genes — triggering massive size, full fertility, and a lifespan up to 50 times longer. Same DNA. Different food. Entirely different life. It’s one of the most remarkable examples of epigenetics in nature. 👑 #fyp #stockton #sacramento #beekeeping #nucleuscolony

Bees don’t travel light. They pack pollen mixed with a little nectar into specialized baskets on their hind legs called corbiculae. Those bright pollen pellets can make up about 30% of a bee’s body weight on a single trip back to the hive. #HoneyBee #BeeFacts #PollenPants #Pollinators #Beekeeping

Bees need pollen, water and nectar (or honey) to raise baby bees. This time of year brood production starts to ramp up as pollen becomes available and warmer weather begins. They use water to dilute honey and pollen to make "baby formula" for their larvae. #honey #beekeeping #honeybees #pollinators

It’s time to feed your bees. When pollen is coming in and temps are warming up, bees start to rear brood. The worker bees need both pollen (protein) and carbs (honey or sugar) to mix the “baby formula” during the larvae stage of development. Unusually warm temperatures this year (in our area in Utah) mean bees are more active, and have been consuming more honey than usual. Check the weight of the hive. If it is light, inspect them on a warm day and give them a frame of honey or a feeder full of sugar syrup (loosely 1-2 parts honey to 1 part warm water, just mix as much sugar as you can into the water, it doesn’t have to be exact).

That golden drizzle on your toast is more than just a sweetener—it’s a tiny, sacred legacy. A single honey bee produces only about 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey in her entire lifetime. This means every single spoonful you enjoy is the collective life’s work of 12 different bees. It’s a beautiful reminder of the power found in small, intentional acts; while one bee’s contribution is just a golden drop, together they create a literal flow of abundance 🐝🍯 #honey #flower #bee #beekeeping #savethebees

Year one of beekeeping has been one of the coolest experiences of my life. I’ve always loved bees, everyone loves honey, the earth needs bees (healthy ones), I have had a honeycomb pattern obsession for years. Plus I’m always happy to add another natural & sustainable resource to the homestead. I had no idea how much I didn’t know about bees… & never been so excited to keep exploring their world. Huge learning curve but so many cool lessons & insights. Thank you to everyone who got honey, it is 100% sold out 💯 🍯 Adding 3 new hives this spring so there should be plenty to go around next year #beekeeper #superorganism #hive #risingtide #nv

One of the biggest differences between conventional and natural beekeeping is foundation. Foundation is a wax or plastic sheet stamped with a uniform cell size. It tells the bees how to build. Natural comb does the opposite. It allows bees to determine their own cell size, drone ratios, and nest structure. The colony organizes itself according to season, brood needs, and nectar flow rather than the geometry of human equipment. Foundation supports efficiency for honey production.Natural comb supports the bees’ own architecture. Understanding that distinction changes how you see the hive. i’m a Cornell certified Beekeeper with 15 years experience as a natural Beekeeper.
