You can choose to grow one main trunk like a normal tree and prune it to manage its structure. 🌳Removing a majority of the year old wood that’s coming out of the ground and heading off existing branches causes the new growth to form where fruit will grow. 🍈Unlike many other fruit trees, figs grow on 1st year wood and even a brand new tree can produce fruit in its first year! 🌱Fig trees are great for new and old fruit tree growers alike because they are on of the easiest trees to manage as they grow rapidly and you can quickly learn and make changes from previous year’s cuts. How to prune a Fig Tree ✂️🌿 Easy tutorial Pruning your fig tree at the right time is one of the best things you can do for a healthy tree and a better harvest. Many gardeners hesitate to prune figs because they fear losing fruit. In reality, correct pruning improves light, airflow, structure, and fruit quality without reducing productivity when done properly. When pruning a fig tree, focus on removing four types of branches: 🌿Branches growing inward toward the trunk. These block sunlight from reaching the centre of the canopy. Light penetration is essential for strong growth and good fruit development. 🌿Branches that cross, rub, or bend against each other. They create wounds, restrict airflow, and increase the risk of disease. 🌿Very tall vertical branches. These shoots often divert energy away from fruiting and make harvesting difficult. Removing them helps redirect energy where it matters. 🌿Overly long branches. Shortening long branches encourages balanced growth and stimulates new lateral shoots, which become future fruiting points. Pruning helps the tree focus its energy on productive growth rather than excess wood. The result is a healthier structure, better air circulation, easier harvesting, and often fewer but larger and sweeter figs. Prune moderately, cut just before an outward-facing bud, and avoid heavy pruning every year. Timing and balance are key. Use sharp, clean pruning shears to trim branches that are growing too tall or unevenly to achieve a more compact and bushy plant. 🤏 Pinch for Fullness: To encourage bushier growth, pinch back the tips of the branches regularly.
