This is my story. To those who do not know, I was rescued by my foster (now adoptive) dad after being abandoned at the hospital from my former adoptive family. I was truly scared. I didn’t even get a goodbye. It felt like my world just had fallen apart. Until my social worker told me I was going to stay with a foster parent for the weekend. Once I arrived, I unexpectedly felt like I was home? I hoped I could stay longer than just the weekend. May is National Foster Care Month ❤️ And I've been reading and reflecting on the many foster care experiences/realities that don’t show up in my everyday parenting: reunification, kinship placements, navigating visits, handling ongoing communication with birth families, preparing a child’s temporary space, and even the termination of parental rights. So many things I’ve never had to think about. Like, do you know the difference between kinship placement and traditional foster care? Here’s what I just learned: – Traditional foster care is when a child is placed with state-certified caregivers—usually strangers—who go through formal training and licensing. – Kinship care is when a child is placed with family members (like grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins) or close family friends, often called non-relative extended family members or fictive kin. The key difference? Kinship caregivers are already familiar to the child. Foster Care 101: Is Foster Care right for me if I want to adopt? In other words, not necessarily. There is already an adoption agency that you can go and adopt directly! For foster care, there’s no guarantee what will happen with your foster child.
