Why I didn’t keep the foster dog I fell in love with ❤️‍🩹 While fostering Addie, there were no shortage of questions and comments from people about keeping her. “Surely you foster fail, she fits in so well” and “How you could you possibly give her up when her and Winnie have bonded so much?”. When people say stuff like this, it reminds me of all of the dogs I’ve had to say goodbye to in order to help the next. The truth is, Winnie and I fell in love with each and every one of these dogs while they were in our care. As hard as it was to say goodbye to Addie, I knew that doing so would allow me to open up our home to save another dog, just like her 🤍 If you’re considering fostering and it’s within your means - do it. With holiday season upon us, the number of puppies and dogs in shelters is overwhelming - not just in Australia, but all over the world. Not only do you directly change a dogs life, but every dog that is safely placed in a foster home takes pressure off rescues and shelters, and creates more space for them to save another dog. Falling in love with your foster dog is normal. “I could never foster, it would be too hard to say goodbye” trust me, if I can do it so can you ♥️ 2 years ago today I brought home Roger, the first dog I ever fostered. He had been picked up off the street and was scheduled to be euthanized. Which is wild because he is the sweetest/smartest dog I’ve ever been around, not an aggressive bone in his body. I had him for 5 months and was the goodbye excruciating? Absolutely. Would I do it again? In a heartbeat.

The side you don’t see when you adopt someone’s foster dog ❤️ While your exciting new chapter is just beginning, a very full chapter in someone else’s life has come to a bittersweet end. What you don’t see is the flood of emotions that comes along with tearing out a huge piece of your heart and trusting it with someone else. A mixture of utter heartbreak, sadness, and anxiety - hours of anxiously awaiting for them to arrive (if they went on transport). Questioning whether or not you made the right decision, if you should have just kept them. Feeling a massive hole in your life and routines that they once occupied, with all their unique quirks that you spend so long getting to know. But also, so much hope, excitement, love, and relief. At the end of the day, the goal is to find your foster dog a loving home. And seeing the updates once they’re settled in, living their best lives with a family that absolutely adores them, makes all the pain SO beyond worth it. Not to mention, reclaiming some of your time and being able to focus 100% on your own dog again can be such a wonderful feeling too. A little word of advice for anyone that adopted a foster dog before - there is no such thing as too many updates or too many photos. I’d say goodbye a thousand times if it meant being able to save one more. 🤍 @bully.baloo Almost every day, we get messages like; “he fits in so well, why don’t you keep him?” and “I can’t believe you are giving him up after all this.” And while I believe these messages come from a place of love and well-meaning, these messages can be really hurtful to the people who dedicate their lives to fostering dogs in need. We simply can’t keep them all. Hell, we can’t even keep one— because if we did, where would we keep the next foster? Three dogs is the perfect number for us: two of our own dogs, and one extra space for a pup who needs our help. Every single one of them become a huge part of our life, but to them, we are merely a stepping stone in their journey to finding their forever family. And they wouldn’t have gotten that chance if we didn’t have the room to take them in. So, the next time you tell a friend or family member to “please keep them”, think about all the dogs they would be able to help if they said goodbye. Give them strength to continue fostering and to let them go instead of making them wonder if they’re cut out to foster. Help us, and them, to help more rescues and dogs in need! We need fosters now more than ever. If you have the space to do so, please foster for your local shelter or rescue. And don’t be afraid that you won’t be able to let go— you will.
