SAVE FOR STUDYING 📚 The Four Main Functions of Behavior: The four functions of behavior describe why someone may engage in any behavior; in other words, why any learned behavior has been selected by its consequences. The four functions traditionally include access to tangibles, access to attention, access to sensory input, and escape/avoidance. Individuals select/choose behaviors to include in their repertoire because they serve one or more of these purposes in their life. How do we manage behaviors? I know this video is long but this is the step by step process we used this Sunday! • Remember: all behavior is a form of communications. Behavior is not something to be afraid of! • Step 1: remain calm. Bring your calm into the situation. Step 2: get down on their level. Step 3: be honest with them Step 4: set a visual timer Step 5: offer choices or deep pressure input Step 6: use a first, then statement Step 7: show them a visual schedule Disclaimer: this is what we used Sunday for a specific kiddo. Each kid is going to be different. It’s our job to try and figure out what is best for them. Connect with them and learn. They have so much to teach us! • #disabilityministry #specialneedsministry #buddyministry #specialneeds #neurodivergent #downsyndrome #autism #supportneedsfamily #makedisciples #autistic #church #christian

🚨Disclaimer: This video demonstrates behavior-analytic strategies that incorporate movement and physical guidance to support skill acquisition and engagement. While no stand-alone, evidence-based therapy is universally accepted with consistent reliable outcomes for treating body apraxia, research supports that repetition, reinforcement, and task-specific motor learning can support functional improvement. Behavior analysts are not assessing the direct impact of proprioceptive input or sensory integration, but instead use movement strategically and with intention to facilitate behavioral goals by contriving opportunities within the natural environment. This video is for educational purposes only and is not intended to replace or substitute treatment/clinical judgment or multidisciplinary collaboration. • • • Understanding involuntary movements and being able to embed purposeful movement into your sessions not only helps shape neural pathways that facilitate functional motor skills that can compete with problem behavior (i.e., elopement), but it also ensures that our approach is rooted in compassion and not forced compliance via escape extinction. Try to understand the behavior before attempting to change it 👊🏼 #myBehaviorNetwork🌎 -A new day in ABA Be part of something special October 2025 🦾 #autism #behavioranalysis #aba #bcba #therapist #abatherapy #asd #psicologia #movimiento #terapia #multidisciplinary #psychology #movement #motorskills #neuroscience #OT #autismparents Hebb, D. 🌤️🌈 Cool, calm, & 𝒃𝒆𝒉𝒂𝒗𝒊𝒐𝒓 𝒂𝒏𝒂𝒍𝒚𝒕𝒊𝒄 🧘🏼♀️ Disclaimer: This video is for humor and educational purposes only. In Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), we never ignore dangerous behavior or signs of distress. Safety and emotional well-being always come first! The “ignore” strategy applies only to minor, attention-seeking behaviors—never to behaviors that could cause harm or signal that a child needs support. 💙

1. We all tell our kids, “Go play,” “Put your tablet down,” “Find something else to do.” But the truth is, kids learn far more from what we do than what we say. If every spare moment we have — while waiting in line, cooking dinner, sitting on the couch, we reach for our phones, we’re teaching them that this is what downtime looks like. That the default when you’re bored, tired, or alone… is to scroll. Behavior is learned through imitation. So if we model scrolling, they’ll model scrolling. If we model presence, curiosity, and finding real-life reinforcers… that’s what they’ll learn too. 2. To our kids, there is nothing more valuable than parental attention. And the behaviors we pay attention to are the ones that increase. But when we’re on our phone, we’re not really paying attention, at least not to them. So even when they’re playing nicely, sharing, or being patient, those positive behaviors often go unnoticed. The outcome? When the good stuff doesn’t get our attention, kids stop doing it as often because it no longer “works.” 3. Attention-Seeking Behaviors (and How We Accidentally Create Them): When kids don’t get noticed for the good stuff, they’ll find something that does get a reaction. And they’re smart about it. They learn fast that yelling, whining, or interrupting gets a response every time. And it’s not that they’re trying to be difficult. They’re trying to reconnect with us in the only way that seems to work. So those behaviors increase… not because they want to misbehave, but because they’ve learned it’s the surest way to get our attention. The good news? We can flip that pattern anytime. A few intentional moments of noticing the right things can completely change the tone of our day. P.S. If we haven’t met yet—hi! I’m Jenna. I’m a behavior analyst, teacher, and mom. All behavior is communication. The real question isn’t what your child is doing, it’s why. When you pause and look beyond the surface, you may discover that behaviors are your child’s way of asking for connection, support, or help with a skill they haven’t mastered yet. Here’s a glimpse into what some behaviors can really mean, because understanding leads to growth, not just reaction. ✨ Every behavior tells a story. Are you asking yourself why? Child behavior | pediatric therapy | therapy for kids | occupational therapy | speech therapy | child development | behavior support | positive parenting | special needs support | behavior strategies | emotional regulation | therapeutic programs for kids | applied behavior analysis| parent education | kids therapy services | DIR therapy

Sometimes the most powerful communication is simple. A “no” might feel frustrating in the moment, but it’s actually a HUGE win — it means your child is using functional communication instead of problem behavior. 💡 Every “no” is an opportunity to celebrate and teach your child that their voice matters. 🙌 #ABA #FunctionalCommunication #AutismSupport #BehaviorStrategies #ParentingTips

A lot of challenging behavior comes from one thing: Kids don’t actually understand the connection between their choices and what happens next. Here’s how I talk about it in a way that feels respectful and supportive: I start by introducing choices and consequences using neutral language. This might sound like this: “Every choice leads to a consequence—some help us, some don’t.” Then I use real classroom examples of choices and consequences with my students. Usually we will co-create a chart together with one side labeled “Our Choices” and one side labeled “Our Consequences”. Here’s some examples: * Standing quietly in line → Gets to go to recess quickly * Ignoring directions to clean up → Takes longer to join centers * Sharing materials → Friend is happy and plays well with you * Hitting or grabbing → Needs to take a pause, and sit with Ms. Zarovska for a short reflection Then I let students PRACTICE making choices. Here’s what that usually looks like: * Role-play “helpful vs. unhelpful choices” scenarios * Discuss what happens after each choice * Ask: “What could happen if…?” “How would that feel?” You don’t need more warnings or punishments—just clearer teaching, modeling, and discussion. 🤝 👇 If you want done-for-you lessons + printables to help with this, be sure to download my free Big 5 Behavior Bootcamp! Let’s start asking about the root of the behavior instead of just trying to stop it. I love this idea: Behavior is a message to decode. 🩵 #iteachfourth #iteach4th #iteachupperelementary #iteach #iteachlifeskills
