The 3 MOST important High Jump coaching tips for beginners💪

The 3 MOST important High Jump coaching tips for beginners💪 1️⃣ Approach Momentum Like any approach, your momentum should build as the energy builds. Starting too fast can hurt your energy at takeoff in 2 ways - by either forcing you to slow down (killing the momentum built) resulting in landing down on the bar after you’ve jumped, or blowing through your take off (not being able to convert your energy up). Make sure you can control your approach and end with greater energy built from the approach than when you started. 2️⃣ Take Off Position Leaning away from the bar (staying in your curve) at takeoff - NOT towards the bar is key!! Your approach is going to naturally throw you into the bar so you do not need to lean into it at takeoff. In fact, leaning away from the bar at takeoff is the most important thing you can do to maximize your height potential because it gives time in the air to climb (which also requires patience). 3️⃣ Finish The Jump!! Clearing the bar after you’ve taken off doesn’t just happen on its own - you have to keep working over the bar to ensure full rotation and likelihood of clearing the bar. This can be practiced after clearing the bar with your shoulders by continuing to lift the hips, knees and then feet over the bar. You should land on your upper shoulder and flip over your body which confirms full rotation and height over the bar. High Jump Fosbury Flop is performed in a variety of individualised techniques by various Jumpers, however these are the main technical tips for an efficient jump: 1. Body is angled away from the bar on take off.✅ 2. Lead arm is lifted as High as possible.✅ 3. Eyes over Shoulder.✅ 4. Knee drive is straight not angled across the body.✅ 5. Foot angled between the 2 corners of the mat.✅ 6. Shoulders are Parallel as they clear the bar.✅ 7. High point of the arch is directly above the bar.✅ 8. 3 Important things Leaning Away From the Bar does ⬇️⬇️ -Leaning away allows the hips to travel past the foot and push the athlete up higher creating more vertical force. -Leaning the body away from the bar helps drive the hips upward and inward, becoming the highest point of the body’s arc. -The lean away from the bar helps the jumper rotate more smoothly over it, keeping their body controlled and tight. . . 🚀 High Jump training session 🚀 It can be hard for people to believe a current 11th grader with PRs of 15’6 in vault, 6707 Dec, and 14.72 110H his best event is not one of those 3. But I’ll stand by it, high jump is his best event. He could very well be a 7 foot jumper this year. Clearing 7’2 at this point of the year with still a lot of technical improvements to be made on the approach is a really positive sign. Last year he was an all power jumper, this fall we are already seeing a better blend of approach speed with power. Smoothing out the inefficiencies on the curve, and utilizing his 10.7 speed can only take him higher. . . . . . . #trackandfield #training #athlete #sprint #coach #speed #jump #vertical #power #jumper #coaching #tips

📏Leaning 📏 Many athletes experience difficulty maintaining proper lean during take-off. This is a common technical challenge that can affect overall efficiency and power transfer. To address this, the following posture-focused jump drill is great for learning how to keep a good posture throughout the jump. It is designed to promote vertical alignment and help the athlete maintain an upright position throughout the take-off phase. How do high jumpers create rotation? In order to clear the highest bar possible, they need to perform a twisting somersault (Fosbury Flop) so they can get over the bar while the COM can be in line with or even just under the bar (usually COM peaks during flight will be just over the bar) This requires angular momentum that has to be generated on the ground with rotations along vertical, sagittal, and transverse axes. When you run on a curve and plant at an angle with a stiff leg contact, as the swing leg comes through across the body this naturally creates the twisting component since the GRF created from pushing down & forward does not pass directly through the COM. The backward lean combined with a lateral lean towards the plant leg during initial contact creates the forward & lateral angular momentum needed to create the “backwards somersault” component (because GRF does not pass directly through the COM) & gets the jumper in proper position for bar clearance as well as maximizes vertical COM height at takeoff to maximize vertical lift to clear the bar. If you lack lateral or backward lean at initial contact you will fly into the bar & lose jump height. This also shows why a high jump is a UNIQUE type of jump and skill. It’s not simply a vertical translation. There are many unique components that must be mastered, which is why it’s one of the most beautiful events to watch. 👉DM me CHALLENGE if you want to apply for our FREE THP 6 week challenge: Gain 3 inches of vertical in 6 weeks

The penultimate step determines how high you will jump. Here’s what’s actually supposed to happen in those last two steps. Your support leg touchdown (third-to-last step) should be: - Foot underneath your center of mass - Midfoot → small heel accept, NOT pure forefoot - Matching the curve of your approach Too far ahead or too heel-heavy = braking. Too up on the toes = no time to build impulse. From there, the job of the penultimate support leg is simple: 1. Lower your center of mass 2. Without slamming on the brakes 3. While loading the hips and quads eccentrically 4. And keeping rhythm so the plant leg can rebound. This is where you build max acceleration! Then, as you move toward plant: -Plant last two steps as quickly as possible! - Arms swing down AT SAME TIME block foot contacts -This creates a TON of elastic energy If you do this right you’ll feel like a bouncy ball coming off the ground. If you want to perfect your high jump, 80% of the jump happens before you ever leave the ground. Here are actionable cues. First cue: watch the position of your torso pelvis and legs. If your torso is upright and legs are very acutely angled, you’re generating false lean. Second cue: feel pressure pulling you outward. This is actually the sensation of you applying centripetal force, or the force keeping you leaning inward that will eventually be used to generate rotation around the bar. Third cue: film from behind and in the center of your curve. This will let you see how much inward and backward lean you actually have. Two important somersaults result from these leans and too much actually impede the generation of rotation. By applying these three cues, you’ll be able to begin setting up a good high jump takeoff through a mastered approach.
