A short video of the monoprinting process using a foil covered card takeaway lid with its lovely rounded corners like a retro photo 👌. Equipment used: - takeaway container lid - basically a foil coated card and yes you can reuse it a few times if you’re gentle 👍🏻 - Ink from Charbonnel - Paynes Grey etching/relief oil based - but any that’s thick enough to work with and not dry out quickly will work - paper type unknown as an old off cut but its quite thick so has some give to it when going through the press - I’ve soaked it in water for around 15 minutes and then blotted it touch dry to get that embossed edge - plus I think it prints slightly better than dry 🤷‍♀️ The subject matter is a large pot made and painted by my dad that stands next to their fireplace with a large grass fan propped up in it. I get a lot of questions about my process so here is a step-by-step explanation which you can see in the video: 1️⃣ paint an image using water-based inks or paints onto a glass or perspex plate (not shown) 2️⃣ let fully dry 3️⃣ once dry, select your substrate. you will get different effects depending on your substrate type, the heaviness of the paper, whether its textile, etc. I used handmade Japanese paper. 4️⃣ wet your substrate & dab it dry. I like to print when it’s damp, still cool but not dripping 5️⃣ place your substrate carefully onto your image/printing plate. I use a piece of paper to protect from bleeding. 6️⃣ time to print! I use a roller/beater but you can use your hands and apply even pressure, or a wooden spoon or press 7️⃣ once you’re happy with the image, lift carefully and voilà - you’ve got a monotype! I love this method but there are so many different ways to print monotypes, chime in and share your experiences! Combining processes is one of my favourite things to do in printmaking, here I am combining a monotype with botanical monoprinting and using my intaglio press. Monotype is a messy reduction process there is a lot of wiping away for the excess ink. I get completely covered in ink, but I do love the marks you get from it, it has a high level of unpredictablilty which I find both challenging and exciting. *** Printmaking Workshops *** - Do you fancy immersing yourself in ink, paint and printing presses in the heart of the beautiful Yorkshire countryside this Spring? If so, keep reading. - I’m going to be leading three workshops in a purpose built studio – one will explore drypoint, one will explore monotype and the final one will roll them all into one to combine the two processes. So, if you’ve ever wondered how I produce my work and want to have a go yourself this is your chance! - The workshops will be full days with refreshments and a feast of a kitchen garden lunch included. The dates are yet to be finalised but will probably be late April... maybe early May. - Do comment below or DM me if you are tempted and I’ll make sure you are sent all the details as soon as possible. Numbers are strictly limited to ten people per workshop... so the early bird will definitely catch the worm. - I also have a question... do you think we should run them over three consecutive days to give people a chance to do all three in one block, as well as allowing others to dip into just doing one out of the three workshops? Or should we spread them out over a few weeks, so if one date is inconvenient you may be able to do the other/s?
