The power of pilates and floor-based movement: My dad was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2007, later reclassified as MSA (Multiple Systems Atrophy - basically autonomic functions shut down). Doctors had no cure but told him his best medicine was to keep moving. When I started Pilates teacher training in 2015, he was one of my first (and favorite) Pilates clients. We worked on spine and hip mobility, balance, and gait. As things progressed, we shifted to more primal and motor developmental movements: rolling, crawling, deep squats, lunge-to-stands. We practiced getting off the floor before it became a crisis. And when the falls came, he was ready. Even after I moved out of state, he trained via Zoom. The week before he passed on April 5th this year, he was still doing Downward Dog and standing up the floor with just a chair for support. He never gave up. Doctors expected him to pass in 2020, and I believe floor-based movement gave him the quality of these extra years. Because floor-based movement isn’t just exercise — it’s freedom, dignity, and ownership. Especially for those facing degenerative disease. Though I specialize in spinal cord injury, his journey shaped my approach. This work also applies to PD, MSA, MS, CP, TBI, CVA — anyone with a movement disorder.
