Narrating a cozy book about grief was a very cathartic and personal experience for me as a widow and it was an honor to help bring @rj_writes3 YA novel to life 💕 Q: What drew you to the book? A: So I was widowed almost six years ago and my manager brought me this book that he described as “a cozy book with magical realism about grief and finding your people in unexpected places” I knew immediately I wanted to be a part of the project. Q: Where did you draw inspiration for the characters? A: So the main character is Zoey, a teenager whose father recently passed away and the entire time I was reading I kept picturing someone between Juliette Lewis and Aubrey Plaza, just kind of that more guarded, stoic type that’s really soft and mushy underneath the exterior. And if Lily Tomlin and Jennifer Coolidge had a baby she’d be Aunt Carol. She’s very caring and kind but definitely into spiritual woo, she’s very kooky. Q: Who will like this book? People hear “voices in their head” in way more contexts than we talk about—and not all of them mean psychosis. Context matters. Here are common situations where this can show up: Inner dialogue Your internal narrator arguing, criticizing, rehearsing conversations, or narrating your life. Annoying? Yes. Pathological? Not inherently. Trauma responses Voices that echo abusers, authority figures, or past threats. Often linked to PTSD, complex trauma, or dissociation. Severe stress or sleep deprivation Brains under extreme stress start glitching. Lack of sleep alone can cause auditory distortions. Mood episodes During severe depression or mania, people may experience intrusive thoughts or voice-like experiences tied to guilt, urgency, or grandiosity. Anxiety and OCD Intrusive thoughts can feel like a voice because of how forceful and repetitive they are—even though they originate internally. Grief Hearing a deceased loved one’s voice briefly can happen, especially early in bereavement. Dissociation Parts-based experiences where thoughts feel separate from “you.” Common in trauma, not automatically psychosis. Psychotic disorders Voices that feel external, commanding, or unrelated to your internal thoughts. This is where clinical assessment really matters. The key difference isn’t just hearing something—it’s: Does it feel internal or external? Is it distressing or commanding? Does it impair functioning? Does it persist over time? If voices are telling you to hurt yourself or others, feel uncontrollable, or feel outside of you, that’s a sign to reach out for professional support. Brains are powerful, weird, adaptive machines.
