We replaced a pointless turf island at a local park with hundreds of native wildflowers. Within a year, many species of bees, butterflies, moths, and other insects have returned, including some that are declining. Thanks to a grant from the Pennsylvania Native Plant Society (@panativeplantsociety), my non-profit eco-restoration group (@communitycanopyproject) was able to implement this project at a local township park. Learn from my mistakes! Well, ok, just be sure to do your own research before going for the clover lawn trend! I thought I was doing a great thing by replacing my grass with clover, but I should have thought it through: all that work replacing a non native monoculture with another non native monoculture! 🤦🏼‍♀️ Clover has a tendency to take over so even if you’re planting with a mix of other things it can take over quickly. Mowing it to “look” like a lawn will require cutting down the blooms, the one redeeming quality of clover for pollinators (mostly the European honeybees). Lastly, in my zone 6, it does back to a muddy mess in winter and stays that way until late spring, giving the invasive weeds around us lots of chance to move in! Darn it all. Replacing a lawn is a lot of work, if you’re going to do it check with the nwf.org native plant finder to locate something that will be beneficial to your native ecosystem! We are trying yarrow, wild grasses, and native meadow annuals this year, so stay tuned to see how they do! Have you tried a good lawn alternative?
