@doctorsgetcancertoo x @talkswithdrsesay back with another mythbusting post and this time on bowel cancer for #bowelcancerawarenessmonth 🙌🏾 Myths: ❌Only people with a family history get it. ✅In actual fact, only 5-10% of bowel cancers are associated with a familial link. ❌There is no way to prevent it. ✅54% cases of bowel cancer are preventable through a high fibre diet, low red meat and processed meat diet, exercise, and not smoking, drinking excess alcohol or being overweight. ❌There is no cure ✅In the early stages bowel cancer is a treatable and curable cancer (i.e. 90% of cases caught at the earliest stage) ❌It only happens in older white men ✅@doctorsgetcancertoo is an example and there are a plethora of us online. We don’t all fit the bill. It doesn’t discriminate. 1 in 15 men and 1 in 18 women will get it. Increasing rates of Bowel cancer in the young - with 2600 under 50 years diagnosed each year in the UK (these figures resemble those diagnosed with testicular or cervical cancer) in ALL age groups. ❌Screening is only necessary if you have symptoms ✅The whole point of screening is to detect cases with NO symptoms.
