✨Sometimes I am completely amazed by the gorgeousness of the monoprints I make… and this one was a complete delight… I thought it would be a real challenge but it was fairly easy to print and the detail is incredible almost photographic even the little hairs on the stem printed 💚. 🌿The meadows are at their best at the moment and I have a large patch of marsh woundwort in one field (Stachys palustris), also commonly known as hedgenettle. The Stachys genus were sometimes believed to have medicinal properties and were used in traditional herbal remedies. For example, Stachys officinalis (betony) was regarded as a powerful herb and in some European traditions, it was believed that carrying a sprig of Marsh Woundwort could protect against evil spirits and witches. It was also thought to bring good luck and ensure a bountiful harvest if planted near the entrance of a home or field. It has also been known to repel snakes and so planting it around the house may deter them, probably due to its fairly pungent scent. I have been feeling that sense of urgency to print with all the leaves before they fall... These geranium leaves however do stay evergreen in my garden, in a mild year anyway, but I just love the prints they make, they are reliable and a great place to start with botanical monoprinting. I mostly print out of a sense of wishing to record the amazing happenings in nature and a curiosity because you cant always guess how something will print. At this time of year its a great activity with young people too and a lovely way to share a little time in nature and creativity especially helpful if they are back to school... I must say I love them, even though they tend to ambush me, especially when I am wearing sandals, their sting comes from droplets of histamine and formic acid. Historically, nettles were a primary textile fibre source, rivalling flax, hemp, and cotton until the 17th and 18th centuries. Nettles have many uses, from curdling milk to repelling pests, offering relief for rheumatic joints, and serving as a tonic rich in vitamin C. However, eating them when flowering (June to October) can be laxative and potentially upset the urinary tract, but the seeds are still edible. Nettle and potato soup is a favourite, and they’re used in Cornwall to wrap a cheese called Yarg. Symbolizing women’s strength, healing, protection, and self-sufficiency, nettles embody a powerful duality—both fierce and gentle, painful and restorative, widespread yet invaluable. In Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Wild Swans,” nettles play a central role as a heroine gathers and knits them into coats to save her swan-transformed brothers, playing with the idea that courage can overcome pain. In folklore, nettles offered protection against “elf-shot” and “flying venom” in Anglo-Saxon culture, and dense nettle patches signalled a fairy presence and warded off enchantments. Trying something different today and sharing a bit about my route to becoming a full time printmaker. I suppose I like to share my story because 5 years ago, being an artist seemed impossible to me. So I hope that if you are looking to change something in your life, that hearing positive stories from other people might be a good thing! Especially in these pretty bleak news days. Using a thin brayer, I roll each stripe of the Walking Plaid Monster by hand, one by one. When overlapping the stripes a plaid or grid effect is achieved. - I really enjoy playing with these color combinations!
