The other day I sat down at my art desk to try a new-to-me medium… it didn’t go well. Then I opened my nice sketchbook and stared at a big blank page feeling… uninspired. So finally I went digging through my supply drawer for my pile of leftover lino scraps, and guess what! This one was shaped exactly like a humpback whale! When starting a new project feels a little too overwhelming, I love taking a moment to come back to something tiny and fun. And maybe it’s just because whales are basically the most incredible creatures ever, but this ended up being one of my favorite prints I’ve made in a while. How I carved the Jolly Monster Woodcut. I first stain the top layer of wood with some acrylic paint. This offsets the color of the wood so when I carve away the details I can better see exactly what I have carved.
