Procrastination isn’t laziness, it’s usually your brain avoiding something uncomfortable. Here’s what’s actually helped me stop putting things off: Start with the smallest possible action → Don’t commit to “study for 3 hours.” Just open your notes. Once you start, momentum builds naturally and you usually keep going. Work out why you’re procrastinating → Are you confused about the task? Overwhelmed? Tired? Bored? The solution depends on the actual problem, not just “trying harder.” Even though this might sound silly, writing out why you don’t want to do the task can be really helpful because then you can visually see your blocks and work out how to overcome it:) Use the 2-minute rule → If something takes less than 2 minutes, do it immediately. Clearing small tasks stops them piling up and making you feel overwhelmed. Examples of this is like cleaning mess in your room, putting away laundry etc. As soon as you do one thing you will automatically feel more productive I promise! Remove the friction → Keep your study space ready. Have your notes organised. The easier it is to start, the less you’ll procrastinate. Set a timer for 10 minutes → Tell yourself you only have to work for 10 minutes. Usually you’ll keep going after, but even if you don’t, 10 minutes is better than nothing, and you will still feel accomplished because you did what you told yourself that you would do! Schedule in procrastination time → Sounds backwards but having guilt-free time to do nothing actually helps. Knowing you have downtime later makes it easier to focus now, and it is super healthy + needed to rest!! Accountability → Study with friends, set deadlines with consequences, tell someone your plan. External pressure helps when internal motivation doesn’t. The key is understanding that procrastination is a habit, not a personality trait. How do you achieve so much? How do you never get distracted? The truth is… I’m no different to you. I used to procrastinate, get distracted, stress out over work. This is completely normal and you aren’t alone in facing these things. However, over the years, I’ve discovered a handful of ways to keep myself on task, and have a clear system to use every day, centred around 3 non-negotiables: 1️⃣ Exercise every single morning Usually I go to the gym, sometimes I run… either way I try to get my heart rate up in some way as this wakes me up and gives me so much energy for the day. 2️⃣ No social media before 12pm This is a big one that I’ve only started recently. I know just how much of an impact scrolling has on my energy and focus, so I save it until I’ve gotten my highest priority work done for the day. 3️⃣ Get ready every day Get dressed. Brush my teeth. Do skincare. If I don’t do these things, my mind assumes today is a rest day and I know I won’t get anything meaningful done.
