80-95% of students procrastinate (including me haha). It’s not about being lazy - research shows it comes down to 3 core issues that are actually easy to fix once you understand them. THE REAL REASON: It’s about emotion regulation. You’re avoiding the negative feelings that come with the task (anxiety, fear of failure, overwhelm). Your brain is protecting you from discomfort. It’s about learning how to deal with it differently. HOW TO FIX IT: 1. Name your emotions - Just naming what you’re feeling reduces procrastination. Instead of “I don’t want to do this,” try “I’m feeling anxious about this essay.” Naming the emotion lowers the aversion to the task. Even just “I’m tired” counts. 2. Lower the activation energy - Set a timer for 5 mins and just commit to that. Usually once you start, momentum kicks in. Even if you only do 5 mins, you’ve broken the loop. You’re training your brain that starting doesn’t mean hours of work. 3. Remove the overwhelm - Break the task into tiny steps. Not “write essay” but “write intro paragraph” or “find 3 sources.” When you know exactly what you’re doing first, it’s easier to start. Ticking things off = dopamine. 4. Pair it with something you like - Study while drinking your favourite coffee, listen to music, work at a cafe. You’re not making the work easier, just less unpleasant. Romanticise your work a bit. 5. Use implementation intentions - Decide in advance: “If I finish lectures at 4pm, then I do 45 mins of that essay.” You’re removing the decision-making, which is where procrastination sneaks in. Make it automatic. 6. Build accountability - Track when you work with a checklist. Seeing progress is motivating. You’re building momentum through small wins. THE KEY: Stop waiting to feel like doing it. Motivation follows action, not the other way around. In fact, I work so well under pressure that at times, I will procrastinate in order to create this pressure.” ― Stephanie Pearl-McPhee I resonate so much with this quote, but I am not too proud of it though. But what I often notice is if I want to get work done on my personal projects on a day off, I usually procrastinate all the way until the end of noon and then I feel the pressure of making progress because otherwise I wasted my day off. 😅 And to be honest, I absolutely hate that.. So in order to help myself, and thereby hopefully you too. Here are some tips that may help. 🙌 📵 Put your phone away This is often my best trick. I even try to combine it and start recording myself for future content! This way I am less distracted and more focused on my goal(s). 📝 Make the work visible Write down on paper what you want to do. For me writing it down and drawing sketches of my ideas somehow make it more serious to me. 🚫 Remove decision fatigue Decide exactly what you’ll do next. Starting becomes much easier when there’s no thinking required. Often when I am like "lets just open visual studio and hope an idea pops up" often ends up in me doomscrolling right after.. 😅 So don't let decisions come to you, make them before you start (easier said than done, I know). 🫶 Accept that starting will feel uncomfortable Procrastination isn’t laziness, it’s often avoidance of discomfort. The trick is to start despite that feeling. Usually, the resistance fades after a few minutes. Especially when the image gets clearer. 😉 Anyway, I know it's easier said than done, and I am definitely not perfect either. Identify the Source: Reflect on the root causes of your fear of failure. Understanding why you feel this way can help you address the underlying issues and develop solutions. 2. Spend time with the emotion: Feel it, sit with it, process it. Avoiding the emotions will only make it easier to avoid the task. 3. Set Realistic Expectations: Replace perfectionistic tendencies with realistic expectations. Accept that making mistakes is a natural part of growth and learning. Aim for progress, not perfection 🙂 4. Visualize Success: Imagine yourself successfully completing the task without any negative consequences. Visualization can help rewire your brain to associate positive outcomes with the task, reducing fear-induced procrastination. 5. Break Tasks Down:Divide tasks into smaller, manageable steps. This approach makes the task less overwhelming and reduces the fear of tackling a monumental challenge. 5. * Focus on Process: Shift your focus from the end result to the process itself. Concentrate on the effort you’re putting in and the skills you’re developing, rather than fixating on the outcome. 6. **Practice Self-Compassion:** Treat yourself with kindness and understanding. Self-compassion helps you cope with failures more effectively, making it easier to move past the fear of them. Remember, progress takes time, so be patient with yourself. Overcoming the fear of failure and procrastination is a process that involves feeling safe, developing new habits and perspectives.
