In the 1940’s, Norwegians made and wore red pointed hats with a tassel as a form of visual protest against the Nazi occupation of their country. Within two years, the Nazis made these protest hats illegal and punishable by law to wear, make, or distribute. As purveyors of traditional craft, we felt it appropriate to revisit this design. The pattern linked is available in both knit and crochet versions. Showing my support for Minneapolis by knitting my own red protest hat. In the 1940s, Norwegians wore red pointed hats with tassels to protest N@zi occupation and eventually the N@zis saw it as a threat so the hats were banned. The #melttheice pattern is available on Ravelry for other knitters to make their own hats and support the people of Minneapolis (the proceeds from the pattern go towards helping those affected by ice). #knitknitknit #knitting #minneapolis #caturday

#melttheicehat Resistance is a big tent. If it starts with knitting a hat, that’s a great place to start! 🧶 ➡️Now connect with your neighbors, see what’s happening in your area to resist and how you can play a role. It takes big acts and small acts and they all add up. This pattern has already raised more than $250k for mutual aid efforts in Minneapolis. I’d say it’s worth buying the pattern and digging deep into your stash to see if you can cast on. It’s not one act of resistance that stops ICE, it’s all of them together. Call your reps, connect with your neighbors, and keep each other safe. 🚫🧊

A quick list to get your started on your crafting journey ❤️🧶(originally made this a IG story but want to make sure people have access beyond story) feel free to share your ideas in the comments 🙌 BAD ASSERY MENTIONED: ❤️@yarn_cult Melt the ICE Hat ❤️Crochet Drive organized by @crafty_mama_mir @helpinghands.mn and more! ❤️Stitch and Learn with @snakeandskein ❤️ @pacificknitco No ICE Doodle chart

I can’t even find the words to say how angry and upset I’ve been seeing everything happening in minnesota. However, I am proud to see the knitting/crochet community come together to fundraise and support the people in Minneapolis and local communities. Here are some that I know of: @yarn_cult has a $5 “Melt the ICE” hat pattern that is based on Norwegian protest wear from the 1940s, and whose proceeds are donated to immigrant aid agencies. @midsummer.knits is donating the proceeds of her patterns for this week to similar agencies @crafty_mama_mir is doing a crochet drive @pacificknitco has a free “No ICE” doodle pattern @capitalstitchco has a free “Abolish ICE” embroidery pattern. Everybody be safe out there. #minneapolis
