What questions you got about pruning? 🌳✂️ One of the biggest newbie mistakes is cutting to the wrong bud 😬 Fruit trees want to grow outward, not into the center 🌞 Always prune to an outward facing bud so your branches open up and stay healthy 🌱 Cut about a quarter inch above the bud at a 45 degree angle and let the tree do the rest 💪🍎 Drop your pruning questions in the comments 👇 #fruittrees #pruningtips #orchardlife #backyardorchard

Those shoots coming from the base of your plum tree are not bonus branches. They’re rootstock suckers. Dwarf fruit trees are grafted. The top half is the fruiting variety you bought. The bottom half is a tougher root system chosen for vigour and disease resistance. When suckers push up from below the graft, they’re coming from the rootstock, not your fruiting plum. If you leave them: • They steal energy from the fruit • They grow faster and stronger than the fruiting variety • They can eventually dominate the tree • You risk ending up with rootstock growth instead of quality fruit It’s not dramatic at first. It’s gradual. And gradual neglect costs yield. Cut them off cleanly and as low as possible when you see them. Do it early. Do it consistently. This is one of those small chores that separates tidy trees from productive ones.

Want to learn more about pruning fruit trees? Comment “prune” below 🍎✂️🌳 3 simple steps to prune with confidence 👇 1️⃣ Balance the tree. Cut back overly vigorous growth so everything is even. 2️⃣ Remove overlapping branches. If it’s crowded or underneath, take it out. 3️⃣ Eliminate crossing branches. If they’re rubbing, they’re going. Always guide growth outward. ✨ Bonus: Keep 3 to 4 strong scaffolds, evenly spaced around the tree for the best structure and bigger harvests. #Gardening #FruitTrees #Pruning #HomeGarden #GrowYourOwn
