It’s absolutely fine to prune lavender this hard when the plant has been neglected and is still relatively young. The key is to leave plenty of fresh, new growth so that new shoots can grow, helping the plant become bushy and healthy again. Want to learn more about growing lavender successfully? If your azaleas just finished blooming (or are wrapping up now), you have a 3-5 WEEK WINDOW to prune them properly. Miss it, and you’ll sacrifice next year’s blooms. Try and prune before June. Here’s the rule most people get wrong: Azaleas set next year’s flower buds in SUMMER on this year’s growth. So if you prune too late, you’re literally cutting off next spring’s flowers.
