BASIL GROWING HACK - Most people let basil grow straight up, eventually wondering why it looks tall, spindly, and exhausted. However, there is a simple trick to transform your harvest by cutting just above the nodes. Look for the little crossroads on the stem where tiny leaves are waiting to sprout, because that one small snip changes the entire biological trajectory of the plant by shifting its focus from height to health. When you prune above a node, the plant does more than just grow back. It diverts its energy into two new branches from that exact point, effectively turning one stem into two. If you repeat this process on those new stems, you suddenly have four. Through this exponential growth, you stop the plant from stretching vertically and instead force it to build a wide and sturdy foundation. Give it a few months and the difference is night and day. Unpruned basil rushes to flower and seed as it becomes sparse and woody, while pruned basil transforms into a dense bush with massive harvests. It is the same plant and the same soil, but your decisions dictate the outcome. By guiding the growth rather than just watching it, you turn a tired herb into a lush kitchen powerhouse.

Here’s a quick tutorial on how to prune your basil plants so that you have an abundance of leaves to harvest all season long! Pruning your basil prevents it from going to flower too soon (which stops your plant from producing more leaves), and allows new stems to grow so that you end up with a bigger, bushier basil plant you can harvest all season long! #basil #homegrown #pruning #howto #organicgardening #herbs #harvest

Want bigger, bushier basil plants? 🌱 You have to trim them! It seems counterintuitive that cutting your plants back would yield more harvest, but this is KEY if you want bushier herb plants 🌿 Find the top leaf node of the plant, go down the stem two more leaf nodes and cut the stem. In a couple weeks, it will send up at least two more branches. 🌱 Do better than me, and don’t cut the small new growth on the sides 😅 that’s what I get for filming with my knees and using my feet to hold the plant apart 🤷🏼♀️ #herbs #herbgarden #homestead #organic #vegetablegarden #growyourown #basil #pruning #harvest

THE BASIL TRICK 🌿 1. Never water the soil, only water the saucer 2. Always keep the saucer full 3. Never pluck, always trim the stem just above a leaf Some other helpful tips: 4. Use an XL saucer or bowl. It will drink what it needs! 5. Repotting into a bigger pot will mean a bigger basil! Use normal potting soil. You can split supermarket plants into multiple pots if you want. 6. This works best in the warmer months and indoors 7. Basil loves a sunny spot 🌞 8. Wait a month or so before you trim 9. Give it time - these plants are three months old 10. Once it’s big, trimming will keep your basil healthy and bushy. Trim off any flowers immediately! 11. I use terracotta pots and water impermeable saucers. Want a bigger Basil bush this year🪴 Pruning your basil plant is one of the best gardening practices to ensure a healthy, vibrant, and bushy herb garden. By regularly trimming your basil, you’re not only keeping it tidy but also promoting fuller growth and a more robust flavor in your leaves. How Pruning Benefits Your Basil Plant 1️⃣Encourages Lateral Growth When you remove the top leaves and flower buds, the plant redirects energy to produce more side shoots. This lateral growth results in a fuller, bushier plant with more leaves for your culinary needs. 2️⃣Prevents Flowering Basil tends to go to seed if allowed to flower, which can stunt its growth and alter the flavor of the leaves. Pruning before flowering ensures that the plant remains in its vegetative stage, giving you more lush, aromatic basil. 3️⃣Improves Air Circulation Regular pruning helps improve air flow around the leaves, reducing the risk of fungal diseases and promoting overall plant health. This means a stronger, more resilient basil plant that can withstand pests and harsh weather conditions. 4️⃣Boosts Nutrient Absorption By keeping the plant trimmed and tidy, the roots can absorb nutrients more efficiently. This leads to better growth, deeper green foliage, and a more vigorous basil plant.
