I do it when I’m injured and when I’m at my best. Not many people can perform them flawlessly, and there’s often a lot of cheating involved in this exercise. Regressing to simpler movements until correct form is achieved is way more beneficial and safer than performing poorly executed pull-ups. So, if you struggle with pullups, or your form is borderline embarassing, you can work your way up to your goal by following this 5-step progression plan 👇 1️⃣ Perform Bodyweight Rows This will improve your pulling strength by working your back and arm muscles while being considerably easier than a pull-up. 2️⃣ Perform Scapular Pulls Hang from the bar and perform small downward movements by retracting and pulling your shoulder blades together. This will strengthen the muscles around your shoulder blades and get you into the habit of performing scapular retraction. 3️⃣ Perform Assisted Pull-Ups Use a resistance band to help you during the lifting phase and practice the full range of motion. 4️⃣ Perform Negative Pull-Ups Use a chair, bench or box to get your chin above the bar and then slowly lower yourself (aim for 3-5 seconds) down to a dead hang position. Let go of the bar and repeat. This will build strength and help you control the eccentric part of the pull-up. 5️⃣ Perform Full Pull-Ups Congratulations! You made it.
