I don’t think I’ll ever get used to it. Because grief isn’t always loud. More often, it’s painfully quiet. A quiet that follows you around all day, riding in the passenger seat, staring back at you from the mirror, lingering in the pauses of conversations you’re not fully present in. And it isn’t just the dramatic breakdowns people picture. Sometimes it shows up in the calm. Philippe Ariès wrote: “A single person is missing for you, and the whole world is empty.” And I don’t think there’s a single sentence that captures grief so clearly. Because, if you’ve lost someone, then you know, grief is so much more than sadness. It’s the sudden hole in the center of everything. You go through the motions, but underneath it all, something is missing. Not something. Someone. The one who made things make sense. The one who gave your life a rhythm you didn’t even notice, until it stopped. Everything around you looks the same, but none of it feels right. No one prepares you for that. It’s like someone slipped into your house and rearranged all the furniture while you were out. You keep bumping into things you never had to think about before. It’s still your life, but the familiar layout is gone. Everything’s been shifted without your permission. That’s grief. And the hardest part? Most people won’t see it. And be “okay.” But it’s not just the person you miss. It’s the version of yourself who existed around them. When they’re gone, you feel it everywhere. Because that emptiness? It’s only shaped like them. It’s only where they fit. So if you’re grieving and feel disconnected, disoriented, like you keep bumping into “furniture” that shouldn’t be there, you’re not broken. Your life’s been rearranged. You’re learning how to live in a house that no longer feels like home. In a world that no longer feels quite right. And that takes time. Let yourself miss them in big, inconvenient, overwhelming ways. It only hurts this much because the love is still alive. And that’s something. Even in the emptiness.

I miss them more every day, and every day we are closer to meeting again. That’s the silver lining.
