1. Some say it’s like a hybrid between photocopying and screen printing: Risograph printing uses a stencil-based system similar to screen printing but with an automated process. It creates prints by forcing ink through a mesh screen onto paper, which is different from traditional inkjet or laser printers. It was actually modeled after the mimeograph! 2. Riso uses vegetable-based inks: Unlike traditional printing methods that rely on petroleum-based inks, risographs use vegetable-based inks, which are more eco-friendly and give the prints a unique texture and finish. 3. It’s a high-speed, efficient print process: Risograph printers are known for their speed and efficiency in large-volume print runs. They are perfect for projects that require many copies quickly, such as zines, posters, or newsletters, enabling small press publishers to get their art and ideas out there! 4. Unique color options: Risograph printers use a set of predetermined colors that are actually separate inks. This creates a unique and vibrant aesthetic that you can’t always achieve using traditional CMYK colors. Mixing these riso spot colors manually can produce interesting results and can be more flexible and expansive than other printing methods 5. Riso has a distinct “grainy” texture: Due to the way the ink is applied through a stencil, risograph prints often have a textured, slightly imperfect look. @asumner_design #popmembers THE RISOGRAPH PRINT PROCESS👇 Risograph printing is an eco-friendly process that uses vibrant spot colours and stencils ~ think of it like digital screen-printing! It transfers the design onto the “master” by burning tiny holes into the master paper which is wrapped around the drum. As the paper passes through the machine, each ink drum spins at a high speed pushing ink through the holes and onto the paper. Each colour is printed separately and layered together. Where two colours overlap a third colour is made, just like paint mixing. The inks come in tubes which are placed into the drum like a cartridge ~ they’re eco-friendly, non-toxic and SO BRIGHT!! Risograph printing is incredibly fast and great for batches of prints and zines with tasty textures and minimal impact on the planet. I’m having more fun then I thought I would exploring several approaches to one design in monotype printing. I’ve gotten a new plate and am working hard at getting it broken in (but still keeping it clean!) I made five or six renditions of this illustration~ Curious to see all of my attempts at this one?
