If you are: Flat footed ➡️ look for ‘stability’ running shoes with a supportive sole. High arched ➡️ look for ‘cushioning’ running shoes (ideally with a wider toe box). Normal ➡️ look for ‘neutral/cushioning’ running shoes. My foot shape is between normal and high arched and switching to these Novablast 5’s have already massively decreased the amount of shin/calf pain I get from running. In fact some believe that they prevent the body from the natural pronation movement which can end up causing issues further up the legs instead! Now as I mentioned in my last video, the most important thing to look for in a running shoe is if it’s comfortable while running. For some that might be a stability shoe and that’s just fine. How to find the right shoe ↓ For decades, the running shoe industry pushed the idea that you needed “motion control” shoes that heavily “corrected” your gait. Overpronator? You need stability shoes. Underpronator? Cushioned neutrals. The problem? The evidence is mixed at best. Research shows excessive pronation wasn’t found to be a risk factor for non-specific injuries in large studies of recreational runners (PMID: 35356094) and the role of running shoe technology in injury prevention has been largely overrated (PMID: 33064799). That said: some studies do show motion control shoes can help runners with significantly pronated feet. But these are a small minority… not the default prescription they became. For 80-90% of runners, your feet don’t need “correcting”… they need time to adapt. Your body naturally strengthens and stabilizes through consistent running combined with proper strength work focused on foot and ankle stability. Forcing your foot into a “corrected” position with a shoe often just creates different problems or prevents natural adaptation. So how should you actually choose shoes? I use a simple, purpose-based framework with my clients: 1️⃣ Cushioned daily trainers: Your workhorse for easy runs and most weekly miles. Start with one pair, add a second to rotate once running 4+ times per week (I use Hoka Clifton 10) 2️⃣ Lighter/faster shoes: For tempo runs and intervals where you want responsiveness. Add this as your second shoe type when building mileage (I use Nike Zoom Fly 6) 3️⃣ Race shoes (Optional): Carbon-plated shoes for PRs. Use sparingly on race day and key workouts (I use Nike Alphafly 3) Pro tip: most good running stores now let you actually run in shoes before buying. Many (like runner’s lab for my belgian friends) also provide quick biomechanical screenings to check if you’re one of the few with genuinely unique needs.
