Whether you’re targeting acceleration, max velocity, speed or special endurance, your session structure should reflect that. We want to pick jumps, throws, and lifts that support these efforts. If you’re not a track athlete do you still need to train max velocity? ABSOLUTELY! * High motor unit involvement * Improve acceleration profile * Speed reserve * High force AND high velocity * Increase elasticity of lower body * Improve coordination/skill of HSR * Potentially reduce risk of HSI * Improve overall strength Whether you’re using fly sprints or speed change drills, we need to understand what occurs during max velocity. These are high force, high velocity efforts that are extremely taxing to the neuromuscular system. High CNS effort, short ground contacts, vertical force demands, and massive loading on the hamstrings, iliopsoas, and soleus. That kind of stimulus is the session. You don’t need to crush yourself in the weight room after. This doesn’t mean that the intensity can’t be high, you just don’t need a ton of volume. For example, we might do our warm-up, max velocity sprints, bounds/skips/etc., plyometrics, a ballistic exercise, a main lower lift (partial squat), and bench press. That’s it. The sprint and jump work is the primary stimulus! You can see exactly how we structure these sessions, progressions, volumes, and all, in the programs below. Link in my bio.
