If you’d like to give your tomato plants a good start, burying them up to their top leaves can give them a healthy root system and make them more heat resilient. However, if your plant is long and lanky, you may not be able to dig a hole that deep…and you don’t have to! Trenching is something I’ve done for years and hasn’t failed me yet. Save this for planting time- it’s just around the corner! #growtomatoesintexasseries #tomatoplants #tomatogrowing #homesteadgarden

Why I Grow Tomatoes ✨️ I didn’t start growing tomatoes until the 2nd year of my gardening journey. It all began with saving seeds from some cherry tomatoes I bought. I never expected them to be so rewarding, and this year marks my 3rd year growing tomatoes. Here are 4 reasons why I keep planting them: 1. Beginner-friendly 👩🏻‍🌾 IMO, tomatoes are great for beginners who feel hesitant about growing fruiting plants. The seeds are easy to get, they grow well in both pots and garden beds, and they grow quickly enough for you to see each stage - from flowering to fruiting in a short time. The visible progress makes the process exciting and something to look forward to. 2. Rewarding 🍅🍅🍅 Tomatoes have been one of the most rewarding plants I’ve grown over the past 3.5 years. Watching them go from flowers to tiny green fruit, then slowly turning red, feels amazing every single time. And when you finally pick one and eat it straight away, the wait feels completely worth it. 3. I eat more when I grow my own 🍽 Believe it or not, tomatoes used to be one of my least favourite fruits, and I rarely ate them. I don’t dislike them, but I wouldn’t usually buy them unless I needed to. Knowing they’re rich in antioxidants, growing my own has naturally made me eat more of them and appreciate them more too. 4. For the colours in the garden 🟢🟠🔴🟡 From green to orange to deep red or yellow, tomatoes bring so much colour to the backyard. They instantly brighten up the space and make the garden feel more vibrant and alive. If you’re still hesitant about growing tomatoes, why don't you give them a try! You might be surprised by how much joy it can bring! 🫶🏻 #tomato #homegrown #harvestwithme #harvestwithshin

Time to plant some tomatoes 🍅 😊 Anyone else so excited for the gardening season? 😌✨ • ✨FOLLOW✨ along for more gardening and homesteading content :) I like to start tomato seeds indoors to get them a solid head start at life. • I find this makes for stronger seedlings and by the time it gets sunny the tomatoes are ready to go outside! 🌷☀️ #homestead #gardentips #gardening #gardenhacks

if you listen closely, you can hear faint sobbing (i'm kidding .. am i?) my tomato plant has grown nice and tall but for it to succeed, we need to prune it back to encourage bushier growth. but it's not going to waste! tomato stems easily propagate when placed back into soil or water so we're sticking these branches into grow bags and hopefully maximising our tomato yield this season! 🍅 🍅 🍅 🍅 🍅 🍅 🍅 🍅 🍅 🍅 🍅 (<- the goal) #gardening #backyardgardening #gardeningtips #tomatoes #growingtomatoes

GROW TOMATOES VERTICALLY. Full stop. . Nothing has produced a bigger yield for us yet than letting our plants shoot straight up! . First of all I was able to fit 3 times as many plants into one bed, so that alone increased our yield. Instead of those silly metal cages (which are a joke but I’ve been managing with them for the last 3 years), building one strong frame and securing my plants to take off vertically was just 😮‍💨🤌🏼 . I had a mix of all varieties here, most were vining breeds. A couple weren’t and we supported and trimmed them different. . Are you growing tomatoes this year?? #gardening #raisedbedgarden #tomatoes #zone6gardening

Six Years of Our Gardening (Episode 86). I've been tying up tomatoes this way for five years now. It's ideal for growing indeterminate tomatoes. Garden twine holds a lot of weight and tomato bushes are stable even in strong winds. In the next videos, I'll show you what it looks like when the tomato bushes grow taller than me and have large bunches of tomatoes hanging from them.

Most gardeners are growing leaves… not tomatoes 🍅 If your tomato plants look big and bushy but barely produce fruit, you’re probably skipping the most important pruning step. Removing suckers and clearing lower leaves redirects energy from excess foliage into massive, juicy tomato clusters. This simple technique can dramatically increase tomato yield in small backyard gardens. I’m giving away my FREE ancient tomato-growing system that shows exactly how to prune, feed, and trigger heavy production step-by-step. Comment “TOMATO” and I’ll send it to you. 🔥🍅 . . . #TomatoGrowing #GardeningTips #GrowYourOwnFood #BackyardGarden #HomesteadingLife SelfSufficientLiving

My top 7 tips for growing tomatoes 🍅 1. Start with the right variety There are two different types of tomatoes: 🍅 Indeterminate (vining) = keep growing and producing all season (need staking). 🍅 Determinate (bush) = grow to a set size and fruit in a shorter window (great for canning). 2. Lots of sun! ☀️ Give them at least 6–8 hours of sun. Tomatoes are sun-lovers — more light = sweeter fruit. 3. Plant deep 🪏 Remove the bottom leaves and bury about ⅔ of the stem when transplanting. Roots will grow from the buried stem, making plants stronger. 4. Prune wisely ✂️ Remove suckers (small shoots between the main stem and branches) to get larger fruit. Keeping suckers will give you more, but smaller, fruit. 5. Water smart 💧 Water deeply and consistently at the base of the plant. To prevent fungal disease, avoid wetting the leaves. 6. Soil is important! 🪱 Use well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. Mix in compost for nutrients and good texture. 7. Add mulch 🌿 A 2–3 inch layer of straw, shredded leaves, or grass clippings helps keep soil moisture even and reduces weeds. If your tomatoes are big, healthy, and green… but taking forever to ripen this trick might help! You can skip a watering session on purpose.. When tomato plants get consistent, frequent water, they stay in “grow mode” More leaves. More stems. More green growth.. But when you slightly reduce water, not completely stop just stretch it a bit, the plant shifts into survival mode! And what does survival mode do… It focuses on ripening fruit and producing seeds! That mild stress can encourage your tomatoes to turn red faster! A few important things… • Only do this once your plants are established and healthy • Don’t let them completely wilt for days, just skip 1 watering session • This works best when fruit is already full size Dry farming is strategic watering! Sometimes less water = sweeter, more flavorful tomatoes 🍅 Save this for late summer when you’re staring at green tomatoes wondering what’s taking so long!! #dryfarming #tomatoplants #growingtomatoes

Six Years of Our Gardening (Episode 94). As practice has shown, indeterminate tomatoes are best grown on a single stem. Caring for tomato bushes is much easier and the harvest is excellent. I cut off all the side stems and leaves that grow below the formed bunch of tomatoes. I will show the result in one of the next videos, I hope you like it.
