#9 Patch Quilt Pattern

Not much more basic than a 9 patch, but it’s Monday and my brain needs an ease into the week. 😉 This is a great jelly roll block, as you can use 2.5” strips of the accent color and the background color, and then 6.5” squares of the background fabric. It’s also very similar to how you create an Irish chain quilt, which I have a free pattern for you in my shop! (Edited to add: I sewed with 2.25” strips and 5.75” squares to fit my sampler. Easy nine patch with perfect points every time! 🙌 Steps: Cut nine squares (mine are 2.5") Lay the squares in a 3x3 grid on a lightweight interfacing or preprinted grid interfacing (like @tensisters_handicraft). Iron into place. Fold one row over and sew a 1/4" seam. Fold second row over and sew a 1/4" seam. Snip seams where the corners of the squares meet. This will allow the seams to nest. Press the seams in opposite directions. Fold one column over and sew a 1/4" seam. Fold he second column over and sew a 1/4" seam. Press seams in one direction. Admire those perfectly lined up points! 🌟 Scrappy Nine patch quilt block tutorial!🌟 These tiny scrappy blocks are super quick and easy to make. Mine measure just 3 inches when finished, so each square will measure 1 inch. A few people have been asking how I make them, so here you go! I'm making mine as part of the #tinyninepatchchallenge hosted by @reproquiltlover There are lots of different ways to make these blocks. Some people are cutting each square individually, which is also totally fine. Some people are using the same background fabric throughout or using two different colours and no low volume for some of their blocks. I may throw some odd blocks in there towards the end to add some points of interest, depending on how it's looking. Details: ✨️ You always ask, so first of all...my iron is an Ansio mini steam iron, and my wool pressing mat is from Amazon! 😆 ✨️ My strips are cut at 10" x 1 ½", although some early ones were cut from scraps, so there were lots of different lengths there. ✨️ To make them lovely and scrappy, it helps to have lots of different styles of fabric for contrast. ✨️ The three strip units should be alternating, light and dark. ✨️ Nesting seams is where the seam allowance sits in opposite directions, so when you press your pieces together and match the seams, the edges butt up against each other. ✨️ Once you've made lots of units, you can cut strips off as and when you need them and mix them with other sets. I also combine my colours a bit, so I've matched my aquas with the mints and teals so all the blocks look even more individual and scrappy! ✨️ I'm using a Janome Memory Craft 8200 QCP. I hope that all makes sense! This is one of my top tips for a quick quilt when you’re in a pinch! Patchwork. It’s simple, it’s timeless, it’s classic. #chefskiss But my absolute HACK to making patchwork quilts is to keep 5” (or whatever your preferred size square is) on hand. I have a full bin of 5” squares in all the colors of the rainbow. That way, when I need to make a quick quilt (like this baby quilt), a huge chunk of the work is already done! 💃🏻 A friend of mine is having a baby and is due any day so I’m trying to quickly make a baby quilt. However, she didn’t find out what she is having so I’m going to be making a girl quilt and a boy quilt!🙃 But I love her and am happy to do that! I’m sure you’re thinking, “procrastinate much?” and my answer would be “yes.” 😂😂 What can I say? I am what I am. ALSO, I love using the webbing method when piercing a patchwork quilt together. In fact, I have a step-by-step tutorial for this technique and I’ll send you the link to it! Maybe next year I’ll be more graceful in my quilt reveals 😂😂 maybe but probably not 🤪 I believe I was holding this sideways but it’s really a two person job due to the size. What can I say I love big quilts 🤍 for my month in #brightoverseasbee I chose nine patch blocks using 4.5” squares, one alternating pinks and the other all low volume, I thought it could be a very sweet Irish chain quilt.
