HOW TO: ASSISTED PULL UPS 🙋🏽♀️⬇️⬇️⬇️ Pull ups are one of the best upper body exercises for building back strength and muscle definition. Using an assisted pull up machine can help you progress if you’re working on achieving unassisted pull ups, but form is everything! Let’s break it down: ✅ Top Video (Do’s): Notice how my body is fully extended at the bottom of the movement, and I pull myself all the way up until my chin clears the bar. My back and core are fully engaged, keeping my torso steady without swinging. This full range of motion (ROM) activates my lats, biceps, and core, ensuring I maximize each rep. Keep your shoulders down and back, avoiding any shrugging. 🚫 Bottom Video (Don’ts): Here, I’m cutting the movement short by not reaching full extension at the bottom and not pulling high enough at the top. This limits muscle engagement and reduces the effectiveness of the exercise. Without proper ROM, you’re missing out on building strength where it counts! Focus on controlled reps, maintaining tension through your back muscles, and resist using momentum to pull yourself up. This is because weight you’re trying to move is YOU, and the machine is assisting you by countering some of that load. TIP ☝🏽: Start with a weight heavier than your bodyweight, and adjust from there. TIP ✌🏽: Control both the concentric and eccentric of this movement (the up and down.) Don’t drop yourself down like a ton of bricks, and don’t yank yourself up to smash the machine at the top. TIP 🤟🏽: Take advantage of the assistance. Get comfortable in the full range of a pull up and dip with some help so you can carry on that movement to unassisted. No half reps here! Just wanted to share with you the steps on how to perform an assisted pole up with a resistance band. 💪🏽 Step 1: Attach one end of the resistance band to a sturdy pole or overhead anchor point. Step 2: Grab the other end of the resistance band with your hands, making sure it’s secure. Step 3: Start by standing with your feet shoulder-width apart, arms fully extended, and the band held taut. Step 4: Slowly bend at your elbows and pull yourself up towards the pole, keeping your back straight and engaging your core muscles. Step 5: Continue pulling yourself up until your chin is above the level of the pole. Step 6: Pause for a second at the top and then slowly lower yourself back down to the starting position. Step 7: Repeat the exercise for the desired number of repetitions. Remember to always use proper form and control throughout the entire movement. Pull Up system. The same 5 exercises done 2-3 x per week steadily increasing volume. This will produce results in practically everyone who sticks to it, *without fail* for at least 3 months. That’s the hardest part - staying consistent. It’s all too easy to skip sessions, swap exercises or do something else for a week, then after 5 weeks wonder why progress isn’t occurring. There are 2 things I’ve found that make being consistent really easy. The first is having an exact plan or program to follow. When you have a plan in front of you, most people will do it. There’s some kind of accountability there that makes it less likely they’ll skip training. This consistency creates a compounding effect that adds up, and the more sessions you complete it becomes even less likely you’ll stop because you don’t want to lose the momentum. The second thing is technical feedback. Knowing what techniques to implement (and which to avoid) makes training a lot more enjoyable. This is why I created my 14 day fundamentals program. It’s a very affordable entry point for people to 1 - have a plan, and get an idea of program structure and 2 - learn the proper technique for each exercise. My next group for intermediates (4 + pull-ups) starts Monday 12th and for people with less than 4 pull-ups Monday 19th. Link in bio to register!
