The Frozen Rescue The wind howled across the surface of Big Mirror Lake, biting at any exposed skin. Yamato, a native Alaskan who had spent his entire life tracking through these snowy forests, held up a hand to stop his friends. "Do you hear that?" Yamato asked, his voice calm despite the freezing wind. His friends, Ben and Sarah, strained their ears. Through the silence of the tundra, a low, desperate groaning sound echoed. "It sounds like the ice cracking," Sarah said, adjusting her snowshoes. "No," Yamato shook his head, his eyes scanning the white horizon. "That’s an animal in distress. Let’s go." They moved quickly toward the center of the lake. As they got closer, they saw it. A massive bull moose had fallen through a thin patch of ice. The dark water churned as the animal thrashed, its massive antlers striking the jagged ice edge. The moose was exhausted, its breath coming in panicked clouds of steam. "He’s going to drown if he stops moving," Ben said, unhooking the climbing rope from his pack. "Should we lasso him?" "No," Yamato ordered sharply but kindly. "He's terrified. If we rope his neck, he'll panic and strangle himself. We need to make him a ramp." Yamato took charge immediately. He knew the ice better than anyone. "Ben, anchor the safety line to that thick pine on the shore. Sarah, bring the ice axes. We have to crawl. Spread your weight." Yamato and Sarah lay flat on their stomachs, sliding slowly toward the gaping hole. The ice groaned beneath them. The moose rolled his eyes wildly, snorting water. "Easy, big guy," Yamato whispered, sliding an axe to Sarah. "We aren't here to hurt you." Yamato instructed Sarah to chop at the edge of the hole behind the moose. Instead of pulling the animal out, they were breaking the sharp vertical edge of the ice into a slope—a ramp the moose could use to walk out. For twenty minutes, they chipped away at the ice, freezing water splashing onto their faces. The moose seemed to sense they were helping; he stopped thrashing and paddled just enough to keep his head above water. "Okay," Yamato yelled over the wind. "The ramp is ready! Back away slowly!"
