The Forward Lean Test - Big Toe, Soleus & Fall-Prevention 🆒 Feet shoulder-width apart. Knees straight. Hips neutral. From there, you keep your whole body in one straight line and lean forward as far as you can, hold for ±10 seconds, then return to upright. No bending at the hips. No hinging at the spine. Just a pure forward lean. It’s simple. But neurologically and mechanically, it’s massive. 1️⃣ Big Toe & Ankle Strategy As you lean forward, the only way you don’t fall on your face is by driving the toes - especially the big toe - into the ground and letting your ankle do the work. Toe flexor strength and control are closely linked to balance and reduced fall risk (this could save your life). 2️⃣ The Soleus Sling & Heel Control Behind the ankle, the quiet hero here is the soleus. As you lean forward, your centre of mass moves ahead of the ankle joint. Soleus (and the rest of the calf complex) has to work eccentrically to stop you going too far and concentrically to pull you back to neutral. This loads the soleus–Achilles–calcaneus sling, which connects into the deep fascial lines of the posterior chain. You’re teaching your body how to own that forward line, not fear it. This is one of those patterns that is rarely trained but heavily relied on in real life - reaching forward, braking, changing direction, recovering from a trip. 3️⃣ NRE From a Neural Re-Education perspective, this is gold: - Safe, low-amplitude, pain-free - Novel for most people (especially adults who rarely challenge the ankle strategy) - High sensory input from the foot, ankle and calf into the brain You’re literally retraining a built-in balance strategy that often goes dormant after years of stiff shoes, flat floors and static postures.
