Yet, through training EXPLOSIVELY over 15 YEARS, he grew his Type II fibers so much that they covered nearly 70% of the muscleโ€™s total CSA, which was comparable to the area distribution of the other world class shot putter. Gunthorโ€™s type II fibers were almost 3 times larger than his type 1 fibers. He also showed greater expression of fast myosin light chain isoforms (MLC 1f and 3f) in all his fibers including Type I, indicating he also made his slow twitch fibers more explosive through training (light chains attach to the myosin neck & provide structural support to improve contraction mechanics). And after 3 years of detraining after his career, even though he still lifted weights casually, Gunthorโ€™s muscle biopsies & fiber type distributions were back to comparable levels of his untrained brother, showing how large of a role his specific TRAINING regime played in sculpting his muscle morphology to enhance athletic performance.
