The process of LOST WAX🤘🏼 While most of my pieces are completely hand forged from sheet & wire, I do enjoy sitting down and playing with wax every once in a while. With wax, the possibilities feel endless! Messed up? Just add more wax. There’s also something super therapeutic about carving… It’s always a nice break from my soldering station! So how does it work? Lost wax is just like it sounds… lost. After you finish carving your piece, a mold is made around it. That mold is then heated to extreme temperatures, melting the wax away and leaving behind a hollow space where your design was. Molten metal gets poured into that space and voilà!! Your wax carving is now metal. Then comes lots of cleanup and polishing… but you get the idea! If you’ve ever had a wax that felt choppy, needed multiple “tries,” or left you feeling raw… this is usually why. When hard wax cracks, it’s not just annoying, it’s information. Cracking usually means the wax didn’t set correctly or it wasn’t applied in a way that gives it a strong, flexible edge to pull in one piece. Why wax cracks (what most people don’t know) 1) Temperature is off Hard wax has a working window. Too cool = it sets too fast + becomes brittle Too hot = it spreads too thin + can over-adhere to the surface Either one can create a broken pull… which often leads to extra passes. 2) Application is too thin (or uneven) Film wax needs the right thickness so it cures into a flexible “sheet.” Thin edges crack first → then the pull turns into little chunks instead of one clean removal. 3) Removal timing + angle matter Even perfect wax can crack if it’s removed too late or pulled upward instead of parallel to the skin. Clean removal is about control, not speed. Why this matters for YOUR skin (especially first-time waxers) A clean, swift pull is more than aesthetics, it’s skin barrier protection. The more we have to reapply or “pick” at an area because the wax broke, the more likely we are to create: •Broken hairs •Extra inflammation •Post-wax sensitivity/bumps The BARE Standard: The wax should grip the hair and release clean. Not require multiple attempts that stress the skin. If you’re new to waxing, this is why choosing a provider who actually understands hard wax technique changes everything. Just push sheet wax on top of any texture you want! Works better on raised surfaces than recessed.
