How to prune a Japanese Maple: 1. Heading cut - tops the main leader to increase lower lateral branching 2. Remove crossing branches - remove all branches angeled back into the center 3. Remove small stems - stems in the lover branching smaller than a pencil. They will take energy away from upper & outer growth in the canopy. 4. Remove succers & watersprouts - this directs photosynthates back to the growth in the canopy 5. 🍁NEVER Pollard a Maple!🍁 Candace’s Acer palmatum was allowed to go much too tall on one side and had lost it’s beautiful vase shape. It was in desperate need of thinning and scientific balancing that required cutting off entire branches to shorten it’s crown (never cut height off a maple unless you know what you’re doing and NEVER pollard/be-head a maple!). The end result is a light and airy fall beauty that enhances, not dominates, their back patio. Pruning Japanese maples should be done in late winter before the leaf buds start to open. You can also prune Japanese maples after the leaves have fully opened in late spring early summer. Make sure whenever you are pruning a Japanese maple, not to remove any more than 25 to 30% of the live wood of the tree per year. It is a good idea in the spring, before the leaves have opened, for you to have a look at the structure of your tree. Make decisions about which stems you want to cut, and use some string or yarn to make ties on the stems that you want to remove after the leaves have opened. Start by stepping back and having a look at the tree’s, natural structure, and decide which main lines you want to keep long-term. Then remove damaged, diseased, crossing or wounded stems. Remember when removing the dead stems that they don’t count towards your 25% calculation since that wood is not live. I am a Garden Coach located in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. Restoring the Japanese Maple in the Tsuboniwa Marry’s small Japanese garden, or tsuboniwa, was created by a Buddhist monk about 30 years ago. Like all healthy trees, the Japanese maple grew over time, eventually outgrowing its location within the confined space of the tsuboniwa. Marry tried to prune the tree, but the result was disfigured, and the delicate form she had hoped for was lost. And here is the process of resyoring the tree. I removed the previous disfigured cuts and used aesthetic pruning techniques to encourage new growth in the right direction, that would restore balance and grace to its form. Marry, deeply invested in her garden, followed every step of the process with keen interest. Japanese Maples make a beautiful addition to any landscape. Here are our top tips for growing them: 1️⃣ These trees do best in growing zones 5-8, though you can plant some varieties in a container and bring them indoors for the winter if you live in a colder climate. 2️⃣ Plant in a location with well-draining soil and full to partial sunlight. If you live in a hotter climate, give your tree protection from the afternoon sun. 3️⃣ Water 2-3 times a week while the tree is establishing roots. Then water 1-2 times per week, or whenever the soil is dry 3-4 inches down. 4️⃣ Only apply fertilizer once a year in the spring, ideally just before the leaves appear.
