I’m having more fun then I thought I would exploring several approaches to one design in monotype printing. I’ve gotten a new plate and am working hard at getting it broken in (but still keeping it clean!) I made five or six renditions of this illustration~ Curious to see all of my attempts at this one? They are all in my grid for a more leisurely viewing experience. I continue to ponder what inspires me these days, I’m looking forward to some deep dives this winter and spring and excited to share along the way. It’s getting very painterly here in my studio, I’ve made a few variations of this design and have a couple more attempts with different color combos on deck. Another house head? Yes. I like it. I continue to experiment with color,style and technical approaches with gel plate printing. And today had me jumping up and down in my studio because stuff was working when it other wise hadn’t. I’ve been welcoming the new year with lots of work both professionally and in my personal practice and it’s been exciting to think of what will unfold in the next 12 months. And the prints keep printing. - To say that my studio is chaotic would be an understatement as I try and get together a new (but small) collection of mini-monotypes for this Friday's 'launch'. With more going into the bin than actually going onto the 'for sale' pile (I have a hit rate of about 1 in 3 making it past the greedy bin) I still don't know how many will actually be available. - I can say that this Great Tit flew through the editing process. A regular visitor to our gardens, especially those with bird feeders. In fact research has suggested that UK great tits may have evolved longer beaks than those on mainland Europe. This change has only occurred since the 1970s and may be due to a longer beak helping the birds access food in such feeders. Evolution taking pace in our lifetime! - Print Release 28/11/25 at 7pm GMT - For the technique-minded amongst you, this is a monotype using @dalerrowney1783 oil paint and @st.cuthberts.mill Somerset paper, which is dampened before use. As I rewatch and edit these time lapses of cutting and reassembling these monoprints, I’m thinking about how often we forget what we already carry inside us. A spirit of power, love, and a sound mind—not perfection, not certainty, just enough to move forward. So I started out on a journey a few days ago and I ended up traveling on a different path to an unplanned destination. Where I arrived felt comfortable and familiar. One of the things I love about this process is that no matter how much I practice some plants will always present a challenge! Hydrangea is one of them... I have tried pressing for an hour, a day, a month, using fresh and this one is just wilted a bit! 😂 Complex plants are always more difficult and remain visually complex (of course!) I have been making some personal discoveries lately and one is that I really love simplicity... I want to make a really good print particularly with Hydrangea because I associate with my Nana she had the most beautiful hydrangeas growing in her Garden they were deep rich red at this time of year. I will keep trying... watch this space In floriography hydrangeas were associated with heartfelt emotion, gratitude, and a deeper understanding between two people. They were also considered as a symbol of vanity or boastfulness.
