This is one of my top tips for a quick quilt when you’re in a pinch! Patchwork. It’s simple, it’s timeless, it’s classic. #chefskiss But my absolute HACK to making patchwork quilts is to keep 5” (or whatever your preferred size square is) on hand. I have a full bin of 5” squares in all the colors of the rainbow. That way, when I need to make a quick quilt (like this baby quilt), a huge chunk of the work is already done! 💃🏻 A friend of mine is having a baby and is due any day so I’m trying to quickly make a baby quilt. However, she didn’t find out what she is having so I’m going to be making a girl quilt and a boy quilt!🙃 But I love her and am happy to do that! I’m sure you’re thinking, “procrastinate much?” and my answer would be “yes.” 😂😂 What can I say? I am what I am. ALSO, I love using the webbing method when piercing a patchwork quilt together. In fact, I have a step-by-step tutorial for this technique and I’ll send you the link to it! This scrappy looking Auntie Anita’s Patchwork Quilt was made using a fat quarter bundle of Picture Book by @rubystarsociety I used all the blue fabrics for background and the rest for the accent fabrics. Make a 16 patch quilt with me! 🤩 I’ve had two jelly rolls sitting around for a while waiting for the perfect pattern and I decided it was time to use them in a 16 patch quilt = classic, fast and scrappy! And FYI - all seam allowances are 1/4” and seams should be pressed in the same direction for each section. Wool is an incredible fiber, valued and beloved for so many reasons. Wool can make a fabulous batting inside of a quilt! But it isn't very often that I find antique, American quilts with wool inside. Wool needs a different method of care than cotton does!. When I first laid eyes on this amazing quilt I did a double take because it looked like...it was covered in fur. Yikes and yikes. Upon closer inspection, I realized it wasn't fur but very, very soft, natural sheep's wool (confirmed by pulling a piece and performing a burn test) . Someone had (brace yourselves) put it in a hot, electric dryer 😭 The beautiful, soft wool which had been on the inside had now pushed through the fabric weave to the outside (@hexagontextile has shared that the term for this is "bearding") and had felted all over the front and back. The shrinking of the wool, due to the heat of the dryer, caused the quilt to crinkle. Such an incredible quilt, covered in felted wool... I spent *a loooong time* using my fingers to remove as much wool as I could possibly get off the front and back. Slowly it began to come back to life! This quilt is choc full of incredible 19th century fabric bits and the smallest patches are those tiny 4 patches with inch wide squares. It's just amazing and I felt it deserved the TLC it took to get the majority of the wool off. This quilt will be made available this week for clients who appreciate the beauty of wool, and don't mind a little natural wool showing in and on their quilts. Once you hold it and feel the softness and bounce, you'll agree - it's too special not to enjoy in it's current state!

The easy way to do perfect patchwork! 1. Start with a big piece of fusible interfacing (I like Pellon SF101). 2. Place squares on the fusible side. 3. Iron to fuse the squares to the interfacing. 4. Fold down one row and sew a 1/4" seam. 5. Repeat for the remaining rows. 6. Make a small snip at the intersection of the seam and each column (be careful to not cut into the thread from the seam!) 7. Iron seams in alternating directions to allow seams to nest. 8. Fold down the first column. Sew with a 1/4" seam. 9. Repeat until all columns are sewn. 10. Press in one direction. The interfacing gives the patchwork panel added structure that's perfect for pouches!!
