• CLOUD TREE • Cloud pruned trees make a glorious statement in any garden. They are fun, yet sophisticated (think Dr Suess). They can soften a hard landscape, and look like floating little balls of green cloud (hence the name Cloud Tree). Cloud trees can come in various species of plants. Most common for the cloud pruning are Japanese Box, pines and cypresses. Within the 3.000 ha of forest and arable land more than 88 ha are dedicated to agroforestry — syntropic and silvopastoral systems that are cultivated, managed, and researched with both large-scale machinery and careful handwork. Here, pruning plays a decisive role. The Finck Foundation focuses on fast-growing support species, known as mother trees, which are pruned using a technique called high pollarding. This method allows more sunlight to penetrate the lower layers of the system, stimulating diversity and productivity across multiple strata. The pruned branches are left on the ground, becoming mulch for the tree rows — feeding soil organisms, conserving moisture, and closing nutrient cycles.
