We are all new at some point. We all start somewhere. If I were starting my quilting journey over again these are the 5 things I would make sure to do- 1- Invest in Quality Tools: A rotary cutter, self-healing cutting mat, and a clear acrylic ruler make accurate cutting so much easier—and accuracy is key in quilting. 2. Consistently use ¼” seam allowance, it keeps your blocks the right size. I use a 1/4” presser foot and it makes a huge difference. 3. Press, Don’t Iron: Pressing (lifting and setting the iron down) helps keep your blocks crisp and flat, while ironing (sliding the iron) can stretch or warp your fabric. 4. Mistakes part of the process: we all unpick seams. Don’t stress over perfection—each quilt is a learning experience. 5. Slow down & enjoy the process: It’s not just about the finished quilt. Enjoy choosing fabrics, sewing, learning new skills, and making something! What would you add to this list? Let’s welcome & help the new quilters!! Me latest pattern “Lemonade Twist” drops tomorrow! There’s something so satisfying about marking a design and then bringing it to life with stitching 🤍 In this video, I’m showing how I mark and quilt a flower using the Sway 3, 4 & 5 machine quilting rulers — then finishing it off with free-motion quilting to add softness and movement. Structure + flow is always my favorite combo. I share my full custom machine quilting process on this beautiful quilt inside the PNQ Academy — from marking to ruler work to free-motion details. It’s like standing right beside me in the studio as I quilt it out step by step. Want in? 👇 Comment ACADEMY and I’ll send you the info 🧵✨

Most beginners think quilting starts with buying fabric, but…. HERE’S THE TRUTH!! Quilting doesn’t start with fabric shopping. It starts with you deciding: “I’m capable of learning this.” Before you worry about cutting fabric or piecing blocks, practice these confidence-building steps: • Dust off your sewing machine and set it on the table like it belongs there. • Tell yourself out loud: “I can figure this out.” • Find your manual, flip to the threading page, and teach yourself how to thread your machine. • Thread it slowly, reminding yourself you’re the one in charge of learning. • Wind a bobbin and notice how it feels to practice without pressure. • Keep a “spider scrap” handy. Always start/end on a little piece of fabric so your real project doesn’t get chewed up. • Change the needle. Most beginners wait until something breaks. Make it a habit early. • Practice sewing straight lines. Grab notebook paper and sew along the printed lines. (You don’t even need thread in your machine to do this!) • Play with tension. Stitches too loose or tight? Check your manual, turn the dial, and watch what happens. This knowledge is gold for later. • Celebrate every stitch as proof that you’re becoming a quilter. ✨ The real beginning isn’t about fabric or tools. It’s about believing you can. And mama, you absolutely can. Save this for the days you doubt yourself!
