🥑 🍌 Starting solids can be confusing for a lot of parents! Baby-led weaning? Purées? How do you start? When is it time to move to the next texture? This is the timeline I followed with my baby, as a pediatric feeding therapist. We took a combination approach of mashed foods with hard munchables (check out my blog, link in bio!) and started introducing soft smashable sticks of food after about 1 month of mashed foods. We focused on self-feeding with responsive co-feeding (this means responding to your babies cues as you are helping them with feeding - are they opening their mouth? Are they leaning forward? Are they communicating they want more? Are they turning away? Blocking their mouth? Becoming upset?). ✨Remember, each baby follows their own timeline, and what’s right one baby/family isn’t always what’s right for another. In general, it’s recommended to start solids around 6 months of age, and they should be chewing at least some foods (meltable solids, soft solids) by 10 months of age (reflexes that help babies learn to eat chewable foods typically disappear around this time). Babies should be transitioned to soft table foods around 12 months in order to begin receiving the majority of their calories from solid foods versus breast milk or formula. ⭐️ Check out my previous reels and blogs (link in bio) to learn about the readiness signs for starting solids, and activities you can do with your 3-6 month old to get them ready to start solids! ➡️ Comment MASTERCLASS for my FREE masterclass on starting solids + supporting baby/toddler eczema. ➡️ Comment MILK2MEAT for my complete Starting Solids Plan (10-week meal plan, 150+ recipes, eczema support + more). Fruit & Veg is marketed as “the healthiest first food.” Yes - it’s natural But natural doesn’t automatically mean necessary - especially in the first 6 months of solids. During this stage, your baby’s body is asking for: Iron → for brain development + healthy blood building Healthy fats → for rapid growth+ nervous system development Quality protein → for gut lining + immune strength Fruit doesn’t provide these in meaningful amounts. When fruit becomes the focus early on, it can: Add excess sugar to a brand-new gut that really needs amino acids and probiotics Feed less beneficial bacteria (hello, yeast overgrowth, constipation, eczema etc) Crowd out nutrient-dense foods that actually build your baby’s body. Instead, I recommend building the foundation first with: Liver & red meat Bone marrow & butter Egg yolks Meat stock Wild caught seafood Ferments Fruit has a place - it’s just not the main focus. Especially not in the first few months. When you do offer fruit, aim for seasonal and organic when possible to minimize pesticide exposure If you want a full plan with recipe and meals done for you… ➡️Comment MILK2MEAT for my step by step plan on starting solids ❤️

👶🏼 Nervous to start solid foods with your baby? You are not alone! Figuring out what foods to give baby while feeling comfortable with it is a lot to handle! 🥦 My suggestion: start with well cooked vegetables! Well cooked vegetables easily break down within the mouth, are easy for baby to hold, require baby to practice chewing and moving the food in their mouth and provide baby with more sensory input than purées. Here’s what to do: 🥕Cut the veggies into finger length/width strips or make sure they are at least the size of baby’s fist 🥕 Steam or bake the veggies until they mash with a fork or squish between your fingers 🥕 Choose veggies like carrots, sweet potato, broccoli or cauliflower Comment “feeding” for links to my favorite starting solids items! ✨ Follow @babblinbaby for more baby and toddler development tips! This is the timeline I followed with my baby, as a pediatric feeding therapist.
